Frequently Asked Questions

General FAQs

Q. What is the law on the microchipping of animals?
A. Since April 2016 it has been the law to ensure all dogs are microchipped by the time they are 8 weeks old, and registered on a DEFRA compliant database. The microchip must be registered to the breeder first and then transferred on to the new keeper. Keeper details must be kept up to date. Failure to do this can result in a fine of up to £500 per dog.

It is also the law that all horse owners have until October 2020 to make sure that all horses are microchipped. Find out more about microchipping legislation.

Q. How does a microchip help get my lost pet home?
A. If you lose your pet, and the microchip is scanned by a vet, dog warden, rescue centre or Scan Angel, the number can be searched on any DEFRA compliant database. All DEFRA compliant databases are linked so the result will reveal which database the microchip is registered on. The database can then be contacted for the keeper's details. It is important you keep your details up to date.

Q. Who can microchip a pet?
A. Only a trained professional can implant a pet microchip. The law varies depending on the animal so please check before you take your pet to be microchipped and never attempt to microchip your own animal unless you are experienced or qualified to do so.

Q. Can I track my pet using the microchip?
A. A microchip is not a tracking device for your pet. The microchip must be registered on a DEFRA compliant database to work. If someone finds your pet, they can get a local vet, dog warden, charity or Scan Angel to scan the microchip and search the number on a DEFRA compliant database. The keeper's details should be recorded on a DEFRA compliant database and kept up to date.
